January 21, 2010 - Groundbreaking on Theatre
Expansion set for Feb. 11
The official groundbreaking for Salina Community
Theatre's new education wing will be at 11 am Feb. 11,
although the actual construction will begin on Jan. 25.
This is the result of an extensive capital campaign in which
SCT has raised over $3.5 million dollars to double the size
of its space. The new theatre, designed by Jones-Gillam-Renz
Architects and to be constructed by Cheney Construction,
will include a new performance space, an expanded lobby/box
office/concessions area, additional classrooms and storage,
and office space. The project is scheduled to be

August 2, 2009 - SCT receives KAC grant to fund Box
Office position
Salina Community Theatre will use a $29,000 grant from
the Kansas Arts Commission to hire a box office
manager/volunteer coordinator for the theater.
The grant was one of 12, totaling $262,556, awarded to
Kansas arts and cultural organizations through the
commission's Grants for Kansas Arts Jobs Program. Funds for
the program were provided by the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009 through the National Endowment for
the Arts.
June 9, 2009 - SCT announces auditions for Sound
of Music
SCT's first show of the 2009-2010 season is
Rodger's and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music.
Auditions for this family favorite will be held June 28 & 29
at 7:00, with special auditions for the children's roles at
10 am Saturday the 27th. The cast includes principal
roles for 3 women, 5 girls (ages 5, 7, 9, 13, & 16), 2 men,
and 2 boys (ages 11 and 14), as well as a full ensemble
cast. Don't miss your chance to be in this beloved
classic musical!
March 27, 2009 - SCT's 49th Season is announced
SCT has announced it's historic 49th Season.
In September, the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical
The Sound of Music will start off the season.
Following in October will be the French farce Don't
Dress for Dinner. In January, the touching and
charming comedy On Golden Pond will be presented,
followed in February by the six time Tony award winning
musical City of Angels. In April, the
Tennessee Williams classic American drama Cat on a Hot
Tin Roof takes to the stage, followed in June by the
Elvis Presley jukebox musical All Shook Up. Season
tickets are available now for the low cost of $97, that is a
savings of 31% over the cost of single tickets for the

March 22, 2009 - SCT hosts Association of Kansas
Theatres Festival
SCT hosted the Association of Kansas Theatres (AKT)
Festival on March 20-22, 2009. This festival, in
conjunction with the American Association of Community
Theatres (AACT), was a competition of community theatres
throughout Kansas to see who would represent our state at a
regional competition next month in Nebraska. In
attendance were representatives of many community theatres
throughout not only Kansas, but also Oklahoma and Nebraska.
The theatres in competition were Salina Community Theatre,
Arts Inc. from Topeka, Chamber Players Community Theatre
from Garnett, and Theatre Atchison from Atchison. Arts
Inc.'s production of Lemonade and Theatre
Atchison's production of Barrymore were selected to
go on to Regional Competition. SCT's production of
Jack and Jill was highly praised and even picked up an
award for Michelle Real for Outstanding Actress and an award
for J. R. Lidgett for Set Design. For more information

February 27, 2009 - SCT featured on KSN-TV
After the public announcement of the public phase
of our capital campaign, KSN TV out of Wichita contacted the
theatre to do a story on the Theatre Education Wing project.

February 23, 2009 - SCT announces challenge grant by Mabee
Foundation.

In order to receive $519,000 for a proposed
new education wing and endowment fund, officials of Salina
Community Theater have to raise $636,376 within a year,
theater executive director Michael Spicer said Monday.
Before an audience consisting of theater donors, city staff
and commissioners and Salina Community Theatre board of
directors members, Spicer announced that the theater has
received a challenge grant from the J.E. & L.E. Mabee
Foundation toward the construction of a 23,000-square-foot
education wing at the theater. The Tulsa, Okla., based
foundation aids charitable organizations, institutions of
higher learning, hospitals and other organizations. More
than $2.3 million already has been raised for the $4.5
million addition — $1,903,450 from individual donors and
corporations and about $400,000 from foundations. To receive
the Mabee Grant, Spicer said, the additional $636,376 must
be raised by Jan. 14.

has been announced.

October 20, 2008 - SCT will present Steel Magnolias
Salina Community Theatre will
produce Steel Magnolias by
Robert Harling as its subscription offering in
April, 2009. This warm and tender comedy looks at
the relationships of six southern women who gather at
Truvy's
Hair Salon to share gossip, their humor and their
sadness. Steel Magnolias was also made into a
successful movie starring
Julia Roberts and
Sally Fields.
Executive Director
Michael Spicer stated, "We are very excited to
offer this rich and heartwarming comedy to our
audiences. We are also pleased to be doing a show that
will give six of our feistiest actresses a chance to all
get on stage together. A really courageous director
is still being sought. The continued success of
Steel Magnolias at theatres across the
country is a testament to the quality of Mr. Harlings
work. We feel that this production will have great
resonance with our audiences, too."
This comedy will replace
Shakespeare in
Hollywood in the April performance time
slot.
October 9, 2008 - Photo CDs for 07-08 Season
Available
Photo CDs for SCT's 2007-2008 season are available now at
the business office. These photos include Fiddler
on the Roof, And the Winner Is, Tales of A Fourth Grade
Nothing, The Shape of Things, Urinetown, A Year With Frog
and Toad, Chorus Line, Willy Wonka, and Grease.
CDs are $10/each and can be picked up at the SCT Business
Office. CDs for previous years starting from the
1999-2000 season are also available, please call the
Business Office
(827-6126) ahead of time for previous seasons to check on
current availability.
