King Henry II of England has three sons by Eleanor of Aquitaine: Richard, Geoffrey, and John.  He wants the kingdom united after his death, and favors his youngest son.  Eleanor favors the eldest.  The middle son just hopes to play both ends against each other and come out on top.  History is glorified in James Goldman's retelling of a part of Britain's past.
